David Katz-New Music Director

UUClearwater.org has a new Music Director, YEA!!!  A great search committee found Dr. David Katz.   Here is his Bio from his website:

Dr. David Katz received his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from The Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland where he studied voice with John Shirley-Quirk and coached with Thomas Grubb, Phyllis Bryn-Julson and Ernest Ligon. Additionally, Dr. Katz holds the Bachelor of Music degree in voice and Bachelor of Music Education degree in piano from Ohio Wesleyan University.

Dr. Katz has worked as a professional vocalist in a number of venues nationally and in Europe as well. Chief among Dr. Katz’s accomplishments, he has performed with the Baltimore Opera, the Bach Aria Festival in Stony Brook, New York and has made appearances at both the Walton’s Art Center in Arkansas and with Cedar Rapids Opera Theater in Iowa. Recently, Dr. Katz performed the roles of Demetrius in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Barone Douphol in La Traviata. Recent performances outside of opera include a televised performance as baritone soloist in Orff’s Carmina Burana. Additionally, Dr. Katz is often called upon to give solo recitals and master classes.

Dr. Katz continues delving into comparative vocal pedagogy, having spent the summer of 2001 studying, comparing and attending seminars held by eminent pedagogues Professor Richard Miller and Dr. Thomas Cleveland. Recent lecturing in pedagogy on Dr. Katz’s behalf includes Iowa Music Educators Association and serving as a guest lecturer in pedagogy at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. In addition to his pedagogical interests, Dr. Katz’s academic research has also focused on lecturing on the theme of the child in the music of Charles Ives, centering around Ives’ 114 Songs.

An active member of National Association of Teachers of Singing, Dr. Katz has served as vice-president of the Iowa chapter of NATS. Additionally, many of Dr. Katz’s students have been finalists and winners at NATS auditions at both the state and regional levels. In 2002, Dr. Katz was chosen as a teaching intern for the NATS intern program. Most recently, Dr. Katz served as a presenter at the 2004 NATS Winter Workshop on new music for the voice. Dr. Katz is also a proud member of Music Teachers National Association.

Dr. Katz has served as a teacher of piano and voice to students at all ages and levels as well as a piano accompanist himself. He believes firmly in the philosophy that music is for all to experience and that all people have the right to a quality music education. Currently, Dr. Katz maintains a voice and piano studio in Sarasota, Florida.
