Arts Secretary for the United States Cabinet

Quincy Jones has started a petition to ask President Obama to appoint a Secretary of the Arts. While many other countries have had Ministers of Art or Culture for centuries, The United States has never created such a position. We in the arts need this and the country needs the arts–now more than ever. Please take a moment to sign this important petition and then pass it on to your friends and colleagues. We might not be able to solve all the world’s problems but we can give people the tools “to hope and to cope” and to solve their own problems. SPG January 2009

From “Q The Autobiography of Quincy Jones” p. 30 & 31:

“I began to find peace. I was eleven. I knew this was it for me. Forever:
Each note seemed to fill up another empty space I felt inside. Each tone touched a part of me that nothing else ever touched.”….

After much discrimination Quincy Jones said…”For the first time in my live, I felt no loneliness, no pain, no fear; but rather joy, relief, and even understanding.”…..””I felt different, and never knew why, but from the moment I plinked those notes and laid down those first chords, I finally found something real to trust, and began to learn how to hope and to cope. …… With each visit, my nervousness was calmed and my fear dissipated. I’d found true love and nurturing. I’d found Music. I’d found another mother.”

Joe Jencks

Aunt Susie recommends the following long copyrighted, powerful essay by Folk Singer Joe Jencks.  His tour schedule is below

Dear Friends,

What follows is an essay entitled, How Long Does It Take To Walk Two Miles? I have been working on it for two days, trying to quantify the depth of feeling and ideas that have been rolling through me regarding President Obama, Dr. King, Mahatma Gandhi and ideas of liberation and human growth. I do sincerely hope you will take the time to read it, share it with friends, and perhaps respond with some of your own reflections. It may yet turn into a song, but for now it is what it is. It was truly wonderful to be included as one of the musicians for the first and second Universal Music Day festivities. I am excited about doing it again this year. I am a firm believer in the magic power that music has in unifying all people from all walks of life. Music is a peace maker, a common expression of how we feel as human beings. If we have Arbor Day, and other such holidays, then we aught to have a day dedicated to All kinds of music. I’m really glad you thought of this, and even more astounding, that you were able to realize your dream. When I was interviewed by Carol Anne Johnson of the Apollo Project, for her internet radio show, I mentioned that I had met them at UMD, and that you are the founder and that you had given me a chance to show my creative talent. So a little publicity for UMD is being broadcast each time they ere my show, all around the world.  I just forgot to tell you about it. Continue your great work,

From a fellow peace singer, Sharis

Inauguration Email

Email just after the Inauguration

Hello Maestro David Darling,

Yo Yo Ma is terrific!!!

However, you are the “people” cellist. So while I love Maestro Yo Yo Ma, for me, the ONLY thing that could make today even better is if you were playing for the Inauguration! (and for Senator Kennedy’s good health!)

AND how about that “Praise Song for this Day”? Written Music and Sound Music — Wonderful!

An Adult President who “gets it”??? Fantastic

Your time has arrived and so has mine!

Susan

Welcome President Obama

Today we CELEBRATED and the World Celebrated with us!!!

If Mr. President — Barack Hussein Obama doesn’t do another thing after today the 20 January 2009, he has already made history as a great man.

His political campaign and Inauguration contributed so much to our nation and the world. He touched so many hearts and souls over these last 4 years.

For those who may doubt my words, the proof is in the amazing out pouring of LOVE and that almost 2,000,000,000. (that’s
2 million) people, braved the cold and showed up for this historic day — the inauguration of our:
44th President of the United States of America!!!
What a special day!!!

And I seriously doubt that he will stop here.

Hooray!!! Mr. President Barack Hussein Obama!!!

Martin Luther King

Today we celebrated the life and mourned the loss of the one of the greatest man in our nation’s history.

He was a real–Treble-Maker and the Music of his voice and the passion of hi non-violent message has enriched all of our lives and planted the seeds for what is about to happen tomorrow on the 20 January 2009!!!

Yea OBAMA!!!
